WHAT IS PAN?
PAN or Permanent Account Number is a ten digit alpha-numeric unique string issued by the Income Tax Department under section 139A of the Income Tax Act. For more details, refer the link:
WHY YOU MAY NEED A CHANGE IN NAME OR OTHER DETAILS?
PAN card data change may be required for various reasons such as marriage, mistake in previously submitted information or divorce, etc.
PROCEDURE FOR CORRECTION/UPDATE IN PAN DATA
The procedure is easy and can be done online or submitting hard copy form. We will discuss the online process here.
Go to the page on the NSDL website for PAN updation. The link is:
From the ‘Application Type’ menu, choose “Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data..” option.
Then choose the appropriate category. If it is your personal PAN, then choose ‘Individual’.
Enter the personal information and click on the ‘Submit Button’.
A token number will be generated and sent to your registered email address. Click on the ‘Continue with the PAN application Form’
You will be taken to the Application Form first page (. Here, you have to choose how you want to submit PAN application documents. The options are
1. Digitally through e-KYC and e-Sign (paperless): Aadhar is mandatory and details on Aadhar should exactly match with PAN data. Not available for minor applicants.
2. Scanned documents through e-sign: Need to upload photo, sign and supporting documents.
3. Physical submission of documents.
Choose whether you need a physical copy of the PAN card. Slightly different fee structure.
For individual applicants – enter the PAN and Aadhar and all the details such as name, date of birth will be populated.
Come down to the bottom of the page – you will notice three options
1. Photo Mismatch
2. Signature Mismatch, and
3. Details of Parents
Choose the correct option(s)
Now, you are in the “Contact and other details” page. If you have submitted Aadhar, then there is no need to fill address here and the updated PAN card will be sent to the address mentioned in Aadhar.
If you want to update the pre-filled address, change the address. You will be required to submit a valid proof of address.
Also, you can mention PAN numbers which were accidentally issued to you.
Now, you will be taken to the “Document Details” page. You will need to provide proof of identity, proof of address and proof of date of birth. Application using Aadhar will automatically fulfill all the three requirements. You will also need to sumit copy of PAN or PAN allottment letter.
Now, you need to submit the documents in case of online document submission and pay the required fee. The fee is based on whether you need physical PAN, and if you do need then, whether the address is within the country or not. An ackowledgement slip will be generated.
In case of a offline document submission, the acknowledgement slip will be and documents need to sent to the NSDL office.
